It is important to know the type of soil in your garden, as it can help find the range of plants that will grow there successfully.
The texture of the soil can determine whether the soil is sandy (good for free-draining), clay (good for nutrients) or loam (a versatile type).
One way to test for this is to pick up a small piece of the soil and run it between your thumb to make a ball.If the ball is smooth and holds its shape, the soil is clay-based. A gritty ball that falls apart is sandy
The pH Level's Influence
The pH level – a way of measuring the acidity or alkalinity – of your soil influences the type of plants that will grow well in your garden.
The pH level of soil affects the nutrients within it, and the types of diseases that could affect plants grown in it, so not all types of plants will suit your garden well. pH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14. 0-6 indicates acidic soil, 8-14 indicates alkaline soil, while 7 is neutral.
