The Big Bee Challenge
The Big Bee Challenge was a BBC Radio 2 competition, launched in June, 2021, aimed to shine a light on the plight of our bee population which is in decline around the UK, with some in danger of extinction.
The competition was open to young listeners, aged between 6-12 years old, to design a bee-friendly garden- with thousands of children entering their designs.
We had the privilege (And pressure!) of bringing the winner’s design, Izabella, aged 10, from Hampshire to life, in as little as 1 week. The garden was built in Doncaster, and was revealed live on a presented show by BBC Radio 2 from a Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust Site on Friday 20th August 2021.
The Result
Guests during the live show and at the garden reveal included BBC Gardener’s World Adam Frost, Blue Peter’s Richie Driss and Christina Harrison (Director of the Children’s Care Group).
Adam Frost said of Izabella’s design: “The design is brilliant, it’s got everything a bee could dream of; meadow areas, wild flowers, all sorts of bee-friendly flowers, it’s got flowering trees and a little veggie patch. One of the lovely touches in there is the sedum green roof on the potting shed.”
This was such an amazing experience for us to be apart of and to know that so many people are going to benefit from the garden including all the wildlife and bees, we couldn’t be more grateful.
